Our Annual Meeting took place on March 24th   with 19 people in attendance.

IMANTA’s Executive members for the coming year are Ena, Edgars, Linda, Liesma, Nelda, Inga, Zane, Inta, Ann & Uldis. Our auditors are Anita and Jon. Some of the discussion centered on finding and encouraging younger members to take over executive positions, which must happen if IMANTA is to continue. The current Board members would help with the transition.

A mobile passport office was here in early spring. Consular agents from Ottawa renewed passports and helped with citizenship application papers.

The Mother’s Day concert organized by the Children’s group in early May saw a turnout of over 40 people to watch the children’s program of song and dance, and then enjoy a potluck lunch at long tables set with white tablecloths in celebration of spring and Latvia’s re-declaration of independence on May 4th. This occasion has come to be known as Baltā Galdauta Diena/White Tablecloth Day.

IMANTA members were deeply saddened at the passing of Marshall Mithrush in early May. He was a strong supporter of every IMANTA activity and many of you will remember him at our various pig roasts and other events. Our deepest condolences to his wife, Liesma, and her entire family on their great loss.

Marshall was also instrumental in helping us choose a tree and planting site for the Latvian centennial tree last year. The tree, which will be maintained by the City of Edmonton, was planted in Msgr W. Irwin Park at 9814-110 Str NW last fall, close to Grandin School and LRT station. The plaque at the base of the tree reads ‘This Linden tree was planted by the Edmonton Latvian Society IMANTA to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Latvian independence’. We will be meeting at the tree on Saturday, June 15th, at 1pm to celebrate and take a group photo.

Summer solstice and LĪGO are a few weeks away! We will celebrate on June 22nd starting at 2pm at the Edmonton Oilfield Technical Society  Park at 2104 – 156 Street SW.
