IMANTA’s November 18th Independence Day celebration took place at Laurier Heights Community Hall. We had a lively group and were beautifully entertained by the children’s group led by Zane and Inga G., as well as an adult dance group led by Inga E. A delicious buffet dinner and social evening followed.

Our 2019 scholarship recipients were also announced in November. Congratulations to Ieva, Viktorija, Ervins, Daniels, Davis, Caitlyn! In the last 10 years, IMANTA has awarded over $200,000 in scholarships to 97 applicants. Sincere thanks to the scholarship committee adjudicators Linda Payne, Venta Kabzems and Diane Davies for their work on behalf of our applicants.

IMANTA members,  their families and friends worked a casino on January 20th and 21st. We are very grateful to all members and friends who supported us during this intense two-day effort. The money we receive from AGLC allows us to function and sponsor the seniors’ taxi program, our scholarships, the children’s program, as well as collaborate with several local organizations.

One of these collaborations is with Pro Coro Canada, one of Canada’s best professional chamber choirs. They will be performing a major work by Latvian composer Eriks Ešenvalds on Good Friday, April 10th. Tickets are available through Pro Coro or at the Winspear Centre. The composer will be in Edmonton for that week to conduct classes and workshops.

IMANTA will celebrate 73 years on March 8th. It was founded in 1947 and is the oldest active Latvian organization in Canada. One of its founding members, Viola Baker, will celebrate her 98th birthday next week!

The Edmonton Lithuanian Society is holding their annual St. Casimir’s Fair at the Lithuanian Hall on March 7th, starting at 4:30 pm. They are looking for vendors interested in selling what they make, bake, collect and create. Vendor registration and public admission is free. The hall is located at 11629 – 83 Street NW.
